Nursing Student Profiles

Jessica Arter

Junior Nursing major from Hartford, Connecticut

"I wanted to be able to work with my peers and build social and professional relationships with people who share the same interests with me. I was able to discuss isses related to my major [in seminar class] and was able to serve my community. [The best thing] is that you are able to study with peers in the same classes as you and are provided with support while on campus. [The Nursing LC] has allowed me to meet more people and work with them on issues in and out of the classroom."

"I am a PAASS mentor through the African American Cultural Center, I participate in Urban Service Track, Northeast Alliance, Husky Ambassadors, Sister 2 Sister, and community outreach on campus."

Hobbies: Listening to music, traveling, and trying new things

Dream Career: "My dream would be able to be a researcher holding my PhD, nurse practitioner, and change my community in a positive way."

Jenna Burns

Freshman Nursing major from Deep River, ConnecticutJenna Burns

"I love my LC! I've made friends quickly, I never have to go eat alone, and I don't have any classes without at least one person I know (which is pretty comforting when you walk into your first 200 person lecture). I chose to live in the Nursing LC because I thought it would be a great way to meet the university seem smaller and more personal. The best part is that your neighbors share your same interests and often attend the same or similar classes. The best thing about my LC seminar class is that it is a great introduction to the services provided on campus as well as a way to get to know the people you are living with better."

"I am involved in the School of Nursing's Moulage/props, Acting, Simulation, and Creativity Club (MASCC), the Student Nurses' Association (SNA), Colleges Against Cancer, and Hardcore Huskies, as well as serving on committees for Breast Cancer Awareness Day and The Great American Smoke-Out and participating in Relay for Life."

"My LC has benefitted me by providing a second family. They've become my support base, whether I have a question about something I've learned in class, I'm feeling homesick, or I'm just plain lonely, there's always someone there. It has also encouraged me to get more involved on campus by exposing me to the many opportunities, clubs, sports, committees, and activities offered to students."

Mark Robidoux

Freshman Nursing major from South Windsor, Connecticut

"[I chose to join an LC] because I knew that Nursing was going to be a challenging major, so I wanted to be near people who were taking the same or similar classes to me so that I could find someone to study with. It [the LC] makes the HUGE UConn campus feel a lot smaller; you still meet other people than those in your major, so you're not stuck knowing only the people in your community. The LC has helped me to feel like I have a specific place and purpose on campus."

Hobbies: Singing (I am involved in an a capella group) and swimming

Favorite Movie: The Sixth Sense

"I really wanted to be able to live and work with other nursing majors. The academic load is so demanding that it is really nice to have your neighbors all in the same position. We all are taking pretty much the same classes, so we can do homework together and form study groups easily. Everyone is also on the same schedule, so we are getting up around the same time and going to bed at the same time. We also have exams during the same time so you're never the only person stressed out, and there is always someone who can help if you need it."

"I have really enjoyed living in the Nursing LC. I have met some great people through the community and it's nice to know I will be spending the next three years with these girls. The academic support is really helpful, and I love that I can just walk across the hall if I have a question or need help and vice versa. It's also helped me get more involved with the School of Nursing by giving me opportunities to work directly with some of the faculty. I would definitely recommend joining a LC!"

Freshman Nursing major from Bridgeport, Connecticut

"The best thing about living in a Learning Community is that since I take similar classes with the other students, I know most of the people in my classes. Thus far, my LC experience has shaped my college experience because I am comfortable in my classes."
