Experiential Course Work
Students take a 1-credit course that trains them for their weekly participation in community wellness and education activities in urban neighborhoods. In conjunction, they take a second 1-credit FYE or seminar course together focusing on the social context of their community experience.
Students hold a 4-hour time slot open in their schedule one day a week for community service (typically 8:30-12:30 or 2:30-6:30). This time includes transportation provided to and from the location.
All students start with the Husky Reads service program to share a common experience. Students in this program read books targeting public health to children either in pediatric waiting rooms or in educational facilities, such as day care sites. Students then can participate in progressively more challenging community service activities that will develop their leadership skills and introduce them to different community issues.
