Humanities House opened in Fall 2011 to a founding class of 50 students. Faculty Director, Cathy Schlund-Vials from the Department of English explains, "The theme for the inaugural year of Humanities House is war. For this group of students, the theme speaks to their coming-of-age experiences during a period of profound international conflict. Set against the tenth anniversary of 9/11, this theme enables students to explore, commemorate, and contemplate the multiple ways artists past and present have dealt with questions of humanity and violence. Situated at the intersection of politics, arts, and culture, students are encouraged to creatively think about their own experiences and seek research projects that deal with the often dizzying legacies of conflict. Operating under the aegis of both Learning Communities and the Humanities Institute, students are urged to fulfill their scholarly potential by applying for research monies. To date, many students are actively seeking this opportunity and are working closely with the faculty director for Humanities House."
Disciplines in the Humanities study the human condition to help us make sense of our lives and our world from a global perspective. Students who seek knowledge in the humanities will be better prepared as individuals and members of societies to address challenges that exist within families, communities, and our global society. Students who live in Humanities House will explore these topics together and learn about unique opportunities available to them on campus.
